Wine Cellar chronicles: Rising SA winemaking star in Spain serves the magic of Rioja

For all those wine enthusiasts dreaming of international travel, visits to remote vineyards and of sipping on exquisite wines from some of the world’s best wine producing areas, Wine Cellar fine wine merchants presents a Zoom series of personal interviews with successful international winemakers whose wine chronicles will allow you to delve deep into vinous adventures far beyond our borders and beyond Lockdown reality.

Following on the success of the recent June live tasting with none other than the Rhône’s dynamic master Michel Chapoutier of Chapoutier wines, the team at Winecellar.co.za presents winemaker Bryan MacRobert who was initially identified as a ‘Young Gun’ talented rising winemaker in the course of the popular Wine Cellar Young Guns events, and who moved to Rioja 7 years ago to start Laventura.

‘It’s time to take Rioja far more seriously,’ wrote Tim Atkin MW recently, as the Rioja landscape is changing dramatically. Thanks to, most notably, Bryan MacRobert. Today, his new terroir-driven wines are causing a fuss! ‘I want to make Rioja as it once was. I’m trying to make honest wines,’ says Bryan who will be presenting his refreshing, innovative and true-to-terroir style of Rioja live over Zoom. Order the pack to taste along!

Bryan MacRobert, cut his teeth at The Sadie Family Wines and Terroir al Límit in Priorat in the late 2000s. Through his travels, Bryan met a ‘Riojan’ winemaker, fell in love and moved to Rioja in 2013. He started Laventura – ‘The Adventure’ – and has been shaking up the heavily traditional wine region ever since. He focuses on single varieties and new-wave winemaking techniques. Farming old vines back to life with an organic approach, his wines offer more fruit purity than classic Rioja with less oak influence.

And if you can’t get enough of the Wine Cellar chronicles, coming up on the 15th of July at 6:30, you’re invited to embark on a journey through California with Wine Cellar and UK fine wine merchant Roberson Wine. Californian wines have undergone a rapid transformation over the past decade. The ‘new wave’ revolution has highlighted producers’ emphasis on making elegant, nuanced wines with a definite sense of place. Zoom details: Register here »
